The stranded whale has found itself on the ground again, too heavy to move. It returns from a faraway place. But I have never seen it this close before. A big animal, huge. I can not get it back into the water, it's still there. After a long swim, it comes to its first end here. But this big body is still developing, all the new life that is beginning in it, all the decay, all this decay …
Whale On Stage is a dance by a couple who confront their fatigue and lack of energy on stage and attribute sufficiency to this insufficiency. They search for a radical and complete acceptance of the unproductive, perhaps non-normative body. They are trying to figure out how to see each body as perfect, how the body and the mind both want and need to dance. Perhaps there are no absolute answers, but often there does not seem to be time to look for them either. But the whale on stage is big and immobile, so maybe it's worth knowing.
The performance was created as part of the research Non-normative Positives, which consists of two parts: the process of developing and sharing the emancipatory artistic body practise with people who do not normally have access to it, which is an opportunity for a closer encounter and deeper communication with these people, and the choreographic process. In the performative context the dancers meet in these practices wherein they share space, manage their bodies and distribute the attitude to time – the result is a dance piece Whale On Stage
