The lecture is devoted to reflecting on the relationship between pornography and performance from a historical perspective. Through the presentation of some of the most interesting examples of the appropriation of pornography within performance art, the author asks why transgressive strategies—ranging from self-objectification and over-sexualization to complete pornographization—are considered subversive. While pornography has (or had) been condemned as indecent, morally problematic, and a “dirty” criminal business, pornographized performance is usually regarded as a critical, progressive, and political practice. Although these practices are important within the art world, it remains unclear how they actually challenge patriarchy, heteronormativity, or capitalism. In fact, the author argues, such practices may exist precisely because of the postulates of Western permissive society and its logic of the total commodification of sexuality.
