A meadow at dusk. Light withdraws between trunks of trees and the air begins to stratify as the ground releases heat into cooler descending layers. The thermocline that forms between them bends sound. Two crickets have stopped at a rustle a stride back. The cochlea is already entrained to their particular tonal range; the auditory cortex, slower, is just catching up with the cricket gap and beginning to render it as a gap rather than as silence. The configuration in which the meadow and I—a listener—will become legible as separable presences has not yet performed its separation.
Field recording is sustained in extended durations in which microphones continue recording while attending takes place unevenly and intermittently. Most interesting sounds usually don’t announce themselves immediately. They emerge from sustained attention, from holding space long enough for the environment to reveal its own organisational logic.
Karmen Ponikvar is a Slovene sound artist, listener and researcher engaged with vulnerable, interconnected presences and the intimacy found within the unresolved boundaries of listening. Her work attends to fragile sonic gestures and the richness of tiny ephemeral details. Working with field recordings, analog synthesis, digital processing, and acoustic instrumentation, she creates electroacoustic compositions, performances, and soundwalks. These emerge as forms of correspondence, where recorded and constructed fuse in a play of mutations, imitations, and inversions. Her practice extends into collaborative work with artists across video, installation, and dance. Karmen Ponikvar is currently studying at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague. Her work has been presented at Ars Electronica, TO)pot Festival, Iannis Xenakis Festival and GRM Acousmonium, among others.
