Lecture Framing the Dominant by Metod Zupan.
Lecture is a part of The Feminalz collective residency and is open to the public.
About:
Throughout the turbulent history of shifting public spheres, the ruling class has been shaped by an exclusionary principle of oppressing racial and ethnic minorities, sexual minorities and women, the poor, and others. Dominant ideologies, which flow downward through the social hierarchy via cultural production and create hegemonic representations of sexual minorities, have been consistently subverted by minority artists in clear critique and for their own survival throughout history. The lecture traces the history of genres of “minor arts” (variety, cabaret, burlesque, ballroom, etc.) and asks why these forms were historically the most accessible to members of sexual minorities, what artistic approaches to critiquing dominant ideologies they developed, and what the pitfalls of visibility have been.
Metod Zupan, trained as a sociologist and art historian, works in practice as an editor, writer, and performer (also known as Gospod Magdalenca, including as part of the collective The Feminalz).
