Oscilla is an open source system for animated, networked graphic scores running inside the web browser. It is an environment where the interface itself becomes the score, and the score becomes a performable instrument.

During this three-day workshop, participants will work hands-on with two free, cross-platform open source tools: Inkscape for drawing scores as SVG graphics, and Oscilla for animating them, synchronising performers across the network, and routing OSC signals to sound and instruments — from acoustic instruments and modular synthesizers to samplers and custom patch systems.

Using a simple scripting language, participants will develop visual and sonic cue behaviours and collaboratively create a short collective performance by the end of the workshop. The workshop is intended for composers, sound artists, improvisers, electronic musicians, and visual artists interested in scores that move, respond, and unfold in time. No coding experience is required. Participants should bring a laptop running Linux, macOS, or Windows, as well as any instrument, device, or tool they would like to use for playing, recording, or controlling sound.

Workshop, which is free of charge, is lead by Rob Canning. Registration required via email info@kamizdat.si.

Rob Canning is a musician, composer, intermedia artist, and educator whose work explores the dialogue between algorithmic, system-based compositional strategies and intuitive and improvisational approaches. He has created music for concert halls, theatre, film, dance productions, and site-specific contexts, while also developing multichannel electronic and installation works presented internationally in exhibitions, performances, and conferences.

His compositions have been performed by ensembles including London Sinfonietta, Concorde Ensemble, National Chamber Choir of Ireland, and Con Tempo String Quartet. His work has also been presented at events including the International Computer Music Conference, Linux Audio Conference, and New Interfaces for Musical Expression.

Since the early 1990s, he has developed his artistic practice exclusively using free and open source software. As an advocate of free culture and open technologies, he has collaborated with initiatives and collectives including GOTO10, OpenLab, London Hackspace, and SPC medialab.

He currently lives and works in Slovenia, where he and his family are developing a rural arts programme within the Rizoma Institute, operating at the intersection of technology, permaculture, and performing arts.

Rob Canning holds a PhD in composition from Goldsmiths, University of London.
