Biography
Nora Chipaumire has toured the United States, Europe, Canada and Africa as a solo artist since 2005. She is a recipient of the 2008 New York dance and performance (Bessie) award for her choreographic work in Chimurenga and a 2007 New York dance and performance award in the performance category for her work as a member of Urban Bush Women. She is Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) 2008-09 Choreographic Fellow and has received a Jerome travel and study grant to study under the venerable Germaine Acongy, in Senegal. In 2007, Chipaumire was also honored with the Mariam Mcglone Emerging Choreographer award from Wesleyan University Center for the Arts. Chipaumire is featured in the documentary Movement(R)evolution Africa. Additionally, she is the choreographer and performer in the dance films: Nora, directed by Alla Kovgan and David Hinton and Dark Swan, directed by Laurie Coyle. Chipaumire has served as a dancer and Associate Artistic Director of the renowned dance company, Urban Bush Women. Her own work has been enriched by tutelage of choreographers: Germain Acogny, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Molissa Fenley, Deborah Vaughnn Narcsio Medina, Reggie Wilson, Souleymane Badolo by the filmmakers Alla Kovgan, David Hinton, Laurie Colye and Alex Potts. Nora Chipaumire studied dance formally and informally in her native Zimbabwe, Senegal, USA, Cuba, and Jamaica. Chipaumire is a graduate of the university of Zimbabwe’s school of Law and holds graduate degrees from Mills College (Oakland, CA) in Dance (MA) and Choreography & Performance (MFA).
